    wireless router
  • A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router but also includes the functions of a wireless access point. It is commonly used to allow access to the Internet or a computer network without the need for a cabled connection.

  • A networking device that is a combination of an access point and a router.  These devices are usually used in private homes where client PCs can be anywhere in the house (and thus use WiFi to connect), and the network is a broadband connection provided by an ISP.

  • Wireless routers are actually routers with Ethernet plus wireless access points so that they have both wired and/or wireless at the same time.

    power over
  • A concept in many societies that people can only feel safe and productive if they exercise power over others, keeping the others in a less advantaged position. The dominant group exercises power over other groups and individuals and does not encourage mutually empowering relationships.

    ethernet
  • A system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network, with protocols to control the passing of information and to avoid simultaneous transmission by two or more systems

  • A network using this

  • a type of network technology for local area networks; coaxial cable carries radio frequency signals between computers at a rate of 10 megabits per second

  • alternative capitalization of Ethernet

  • A set of network cabling and network access (CSMA/CD) protocol standards for bus topology computer networks invented by Xerox but now controlled by the 802.3 subcommittee of the IEEE; A computer network which complies with such set of standards

Router/server corner

Router/server corner

I spent much of the afternoon cleaning up the corner where the router, ethernet switch, and wireless access point live, and moving the server's new monitor over there. Previously it was an insane mess of cables, power strips, and dust bunnies. The ancient ASA maxi-tower server and two old CRT monitors will be going to the e-waste recycling event this weekend... and not coming back. My two trusty network admins (The Scream and Hello Kitty) provide on-site support.

Motorola PMP (Point to multi-point) 320 subscriber unit and associated hardware. The subscriber unit is placed at the end user location to provide connectivity to the access point on the tower. This shows the subscriber unit, Ethernet surge, POE (power over Ethernet) power supply and a Linksys wireless router.
